Overview

Coastal Camino de Santiago

Cross the stunning Rio Minho – a natural border between Portugal and Spain

Caminha is a fortified border town situated at the mouth of the River Minho, where several battles were fought between Portugal and Spain. Caminha now enjoys much more friendly relations with its neighbour and there is a daily ferry-boat linking the two banks of the river.
Standing on a tiny island in the middle of the estuary are the ruins of the fort of Ínsua, built to defend the entrance to the river in the fifteenth century. Caminha is a natural and good place to start walking to Santiago de Compostela. This route was followed by pilgrims from the western lands, to get Compostela following the coastal camino de Santiago.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Walk through a thousand years of history on the worlds’ grandest historical and religious trail, retracing the steps of countless pilgrims.
  • Explore the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture of Santiago de Compostela, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage.
  • Cross the border between Portugal and Spain following an age-old pilgrimage route.
  • Discover Pontevedra, an antique city founded by the Romans and considered by many the capital of the Portuguese Camino to Santiago.
  • Explore the small city of Padrón, site where the stone barge that transported the remains of Saint James reached Spain and made Port.
